Kindergarten sets the foundation for Spanish language with 90% of class instruction in Spanish and 10% in English. Falcons are aiming to develop a strong basic foundation to determine if they will be placed in Progressive First or Academic First.
Key highlights: All objectives are in Spanish! Recognize, write, order and count up to 20, plus, add and subtract small numbers. Recognize and write name, alphabet, a simple sentence with simple grammar, and read 30 high-frequency words. Plus, a basic concept of the weather and seasons.
Students in Progressive First receive an extra year of exposure to their second language where there’s a 50/50 split of English and Spanish to help these little Falcons prepare for the next step: Academic First. We call Progressive First a bridge between Kinder and First grade.
With a stronger foundation set, we see these Falcons become the leaders in Academic first!
Foundational language learning kicks up a bit in Academic First, where instruction is one week English and one week Spanish. True first-grade curriculum begins in reading, writing, and math to prepare for second grade. Falcons also get to be creative with art, cultural dance, and move their bodies with P.E.
Language learning continues in both English and Spanish as students continue to build up their understanding of reading, writing, and math in both languages.
Key highlights: For second grade math, problems begin to include 3-digits while third graders focus on multiplication, division, with an intro to fractions. Students also hit a growth spurt in reading and writing in their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing styles.
In preparation for Jr. Prep, students transition to more accountability and independence of their own learning and grades.
Key highlights: By the end of the year, fourth graders are expected to be experts in multiplication and division while fifth graders should be experts in fractions. In both years, Falcons increase their love of reading through: book clubs, genre studies, writing in detail about their reading, and thinking deeply to connect to their reading.
